Basically, cognition is related to our activities like thinking, reading, talking, writing etc. From the learning, we can consider how to design a UI based on what user can and cannot be expected. For example, if we put a login button on the first page of the system, the user will expect that they need to create an account first before login into the system.
Cognitive Processes:-
Attention
In a simple way, attention is defined as a choose something where we need to have more focus on it and not being attracted to others around us. For example, we can see the Bank Islam Go, there have shown the bigger display of balance after we login into the application. As a user, we know that checking balance is the main purpose of using it because we cannot do anything without know our balance. This app also shows only one function on one page like on that page, there are only show us the balance only. So, we are focusing on it.
The way to implement the attention is we can consider their colour, ordering, spacing and animation to make the information salient when it needs to be attended to. other than that, don't put all the information on one page. it will make user hard to read and identify what they are looking for.
Perception is defined as how information is acquired from the world and transform into an experience. This is the way we need to ensure that the confusion should be decreased.
The way to implement the perception is we can use icons and sound to make users easy to distinguish and understanding their meaning. Other than that, bordering and spacing can be implemented in the UI in order to manage or beautify the information.
Memory
Memory involves recalling various kind of knowledge that allows people to act appropriately. In the human mind, the will encode the information first and then retrieve the knowledge. For the information, we recognize better than recall anything. That is the reason why the design should implement the recognition element rather than recalling anything.
The way to implement the memory is minimizing the instruction to perform a certain task. Do not fill human memory with complexity. Other than that, UI should promote recognition rather than recall. This is the important thing.
Learning
Learning is generally the user process to learn a computer-based application. A user can learn an application in many different ways. But studies found out that many people prefer to explore a thing instead of reading about it.
Reflection
In this topic, I learn a lot of things related to cognitive engineering. This is very new knowledge that I learn in my life. Before this, I never heard about cognitive engineering until I learn it in Course UI and UX. In order to produce a better User Interface, we need to consider cognitive engineering too. Cognitive engineering also one of the things that close to the user.
